FAQ
Below
you'll find answers to the most common questions about our Ski & Sail
expeditions, the boat, guiding, fitness level, safety, logistics, and life on
board MS Tuvholmen.
If you don't find what you're looking for, feel free to contact us.
1. Compared to Ski & Sail trips with other companies. Why should I choose
you?
A very fair – and important – question.
One of the key differences is the type of boat we operate and how that affects comfort, space, and the overall experience.
NX's boat MS Tuvholmen is a larger, solid rebuilt fishing vessel, not a sailing boat. Compared to many Ski & Sail trips that operate from sailboats, this gives us significantly more interior volume and deck space, which makes a real difference during multi-day Arctic expeditions.
On board you'll find:
- A large, heated salon with good headroom and a genuine sense of space
- Plenty of seating where the entire group can gather comfortably
- A spacious working deck, well suited for activities such as fishing, hot tub sessions, gear handling and daily operations
This extra
space allows for a calmer atmosphere on board, better flow during the day, and
a more social and comfortable experience – especially in challenging weather.
For those who need a moment of quiet or privacy, guests can always retreat to
their cabin for some personal downtime.
At the same time, MS Tuvholmen is a traditional working vessel, rebuilt for small-group expedition travel. She is designed for real Arctic conditions, not floating hotel luxury. Our focus is on authentic experiences, flexibility, and access, rather than spa facilities or resort-style comfort.
We deliberately keep our groups small, our programs flexible, and our days shaped by weather, snow conditions, and the group's ability. The boat is a warm and reliable base – but the real value of the trip happens outside: in the mountains, the fjords, and the shared experience on board.
We believe quality comes from:
- Experienced and certified guides
- A calm and safety-focused skipper
- Additonal activites like fishing, experience kingcrabs and more
- Small groups and personal attention
- Honest expectations and realistic comfort
Some trips may be cheaper, others more luxurious. Our pricing reflects the experience we offer: safe, personal, flexible, and genuine Arctic adventure..
2. What ability level do I need to join a group trip?
You must be a confident intermediate skier or snowboarder.
If you can ski or ride in all conditions on an intermediate run at a ski resort, you have the technical ability needed to join our trips. Backcountry conditions vary daily, and confidence is more important than speed or style.
When possible, we can split the group based on:
- Ability
- Fitness
- Daily objectives
This depends on guide availability and group size.
3. Can my 16-year-old daughter/son join the trip?
Yes.
Guests aged
16 and older may join if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
The guardian is responsible for the minor throughout the trip.
4. What fitness level is required?
We welcome guests with varying levels of experience, but a reasonable level of fitness is required, especially on open group trips.
Ski touring involves:
- Uphill movement
- Variable weather
- Changing terrain
For private trips, we can fully customize the itinerary to suit your fitness level, experience, and objectives.
5. What if the weather is too bad to ski?
Our guides are highly experienced in planning and adapting to weather conditions, and we often find excellent skiing even when the forecast looks challenging.
If skiing is not safe or enjoyable, we can offer alternative activities, such as:
- Fishing
- Fjord exploration
- Local activities like dog sledding or snowmobiling (with partners)
These additional activities may involve extra cost.
And yes – sometimes the best option is simply slowing down, enjoying the warmth on board, and embracing the Arctic rhythm of the day.
6. What gear do I need to bring?
A detailed packing list is included in the information package sent before departure.
Please read it carefully and follow it closely.

7. What is your cancellation policy?
You'll find our full cancellation policy here:

We strongly recommend Trip Cancellation Insurance for everyone's protection.
8. Do I need to fill out a waiver?
Yes.
All guests must review and agree to the Release of Liability, Waiver of Claims, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement as a condition of participation.
Please read the waiver carefully. By signing, you waive certain legal rights, including the right to sue for negligence or claim compensation following an accident.
The waiver and participation agreement are part of the booking process and must be completed no later than 3 weeks before departure.
This allows us to:
- Confirm participation
- Handle food allergies and dietary needs
For private trips, the booking guest is responsible for ensuring that all participants complete the registration, waiver, and participation agreement.
9. What is your guide-to-guest ratio?
This varies between trips, but our maximum ratio is 7 guests per guide.
10. Are flights included in the price?
No.
Flights are not included, giving you the flexibility to:
- Find your own deals
- Extend your trip
- Combine the expedition with other travel plans
11. What is the accommodation like on board?
For an old rebuild fishing vessel, accommodation on MS Tuvholmen is comfortable and functional.
- Each guest has their own bed
- Cabins accommodate up to 4 guests per cabin for the 2026 spring & summer season
For the 2026/2027 season, we are planning:
- Fewer guests per cabin
- Higher standard
- Maximum 2 guests per cabin
This is expedition comfort – warm, safe, and practical – rather than luxury yacht standard.
12. Can I bring my own alcohol on board?
Alcohol policies will follow Norwegian regulations.
We plan to
offer a selection of local beverages on board.
Until final licensing is in place, details will be clearly communicated before
departure.
If you have preferences, you'll be able to note this during registration, and we'll do our best to accommodate within legal limits.
