Responsible Travel
Responsible travel is not a separate product for us, but the foundation of how we operate. Our journeys are shaped by nature, weather and local knowledge, with respect for wildlife, communities and the environments we move through.
Our approach to responsible travel
NX Journey operates small-scale, sea-based journeys in Arctic Norway, where weather, light and sea conditions shape both the journey and the decisions we make. Our operations are built on local knowledge, seasonal awareness and respect for nature, wildlife and people.
We believe that meaningful travel in the Arctic must be slow, selective and carefully adapted to conditions rather than driven by volume or fixed schedules. We operate with small groups only (maximum 12 guests) and prioritise quality, safety and low impact over growth. Our journeys are shaped by weather, sea state and wildlife behaviour, and plans may change to ensure responsible decision-making at all times.
Environmental responsibility
We work to minimise our environmental footprint through practical operational choices rather than offsets or generic claims.
- We operate small groups to reduce pressure on nature and sensitive areas
- Routes, speed and activities are adapted to prevailing conditions to reduce fuel use and disturbance
- Waste is minimised on board, sorted responsibly and handled ashore at approved facilities
- We have deliberately chosen durable, reusable solutions on board. Meals are served on porcelain, and reusable cups, plates and utensils are used as standard. Disposable items are avoided as part of our everyday operations rather than as a temporary measure
- Guests are briefed on environmental conduct before and during trips
We avoid high-frequency operations and do not operate on a mass-tourism model.
Wildlife and nature protection
Wildlife encounters are treated as privileges, not guarantees.
- All wildlife viewing, including whale encounters, is conducted with respect, distance and patience
- We never chase, encircle or pressure animals for closer encounters
- Activities are adapted or cancelled if conditions are not suitable for responsible observation
- We follow national guidelines and recognised best practice for wildlife interaction
Nature always sets the limits for our operations, not guest expectations.
Local community and economy
We aim to contribute positively to the regions we operate in.
- We collaborate with local suppliers, guides and services where possible
- Our operations are based in and around local communities, with respect for everyday life and working environments
- Guests are encouraged to understand local culture, history and Arctic living conditions
- We avoid activities that disrupt local livelihoods or place unnecessary pressure on small communities
Economic value should remain locally anchored rather than extracted.
Guests, safety and group size
Safety and well-being are fundamental to responsible travel.
- Group sizes are strictly limited to ensure safety, flexibility and low impact
- Guests receive clear pre-trip information about conditions, risks and required preparedness
- All trips are led by experienced crew with strong local knowledge
- Decisions are made conservatively, with safety and responsibility prioritised over planned itineraries
We do not operate fixed-outcome trips and are transparent about the realities of Arctic travel.
Seasonality and decision-making
Our journeys follow natural and seasonal rhythms.
- Activities are planned within appropriate seasons
- We avoid promoting out-of-season or high-risk operations
- Weather, sea conditions and daylight determine daily plans
- Trips may be adjusted, delayed or cancelled when conditions require it
Flexibility is an essential part of responsible Arctic travel.
Continuous improvement
Responsible travel is an ongoing process.
- We regularly review our operations and decision-making
- Guest feedback is used to improve communication and practices
- We stay informed about guidelines, research and local recommendations
- This policy is reviewed and updated as our operations evolve
We commit to honesty, transparency and continuous learning over time.
