The Experience

Whale & Sail is a multi-day Arctic expedition focused on slow travel, wildlife encounters and life on board during the polar night. You will live aboard our expedition vessel, MS Tuvholmen, which serves as both transport and floating lodge throughout the journey.

Each day is shaped by weather conditions, whale activity and local knowledge. We move quietly through sheltered fjords, observing orcas and humpback whales directly from the vessel and experiencing the raw winter landscape of Northern Norway.

This is not a fixed-itinerary tour. It is an expedition – flexible, calm and immersive – designed to adapt to conditions while prioritizing safety, comfort and authentic experiences.

Daily Life On Board

Days begin with breakfast and an assessment of weather and conditions. When whales are present, we spend extended time observing them from the vessel. Between whale encounters, there may be opportunities for fishing when conditions allow, as well as time to relax on board or explore remote coastal areas.

Evenings are slow and atmospheric, with warm meals, conversation and the deep blue light of the polar night surrounding the boat. On suitable days, guests may enjoy optional winter dips and hot tub sessions under the Arctic sky.

Wildlife

The expedition takes place during the herring season, when orcas and humpback whales are known to migrate into the fjords of Northern Norway. Whales are wild animals, and sightings cannot be guaranteed.

However, based on observations from previous seasons, whale activity during this period has typically been frequent and consistent. When migration patterns follow similar routes as in past years, whale encounters are often observed on a daily basis. Routes and daily plans are continuously adjusted based on observed activity and prevailing conditions to maximize opportunities for encounters.

Meals

Meals are prepared on board with a focus on local and seasonal ingredients. This may include Arctic fish, reindeer and other locally sourced game, alongside warming dishes suited for winter conditions.

Fishing is offered as an optional activity when conditions permit. If fish are caught, guests may take part in preparing and enjoying the catch on board. All meals are provided regardless of fishing success.
